Fitness, food and fun… three of my favourite ‘F’ words, and the stars of 'DOSE', a brilliant new guide to working out and going out in London
DOSE stands for Dopamine, Oxytocin, Serotonin and Endorphin - aka our happy hormones - and the DOSE newsletter is a weekly hit list of places to get your sweat on, refuel and then toast your hard work with a healthy (ish) tipple, all in the same postcode.
The brainchild of Shara and Hettie, who have worked in the fitness business for the past six years launching start-ups like Fitness Freak, 1Rebel and Facegym, DOSE is all about ‘the new hedonism’ that we love to champion on Detox|Retox. And we’re hooked.
The two women now spend their days and nights researching studios, bars and restaurants to recommend as Move, Fuel and Thrill picks for the weekly DOSE missives. And to celebrate the launch of their new app they have shared their favourite places to eat, drink and play across the city with us here.
They say: “Londoners live a fast-paced, work hard, play hard lifestyle. We want to discourage people from going to the extremes of working out so hard during the week and then bingeing to excess at the weekends. We don’t believe in denial and deprivation, that just makes you want to flip a switch. Fitness is great for instilling some discipline but enjoy yourself while you’re at it. It's about balance.”
DOSE DETOX| Picks
1. CLEAN AND LEAN CAFE, WESTBOURNE GROVE
“Contrary to popular belief you don’t have to hail from Mount Olympus to step inside Bodyism’s cafe in Westbourne Grove… the trainers here may be genetically gifted but it maintains a really down-to-earth, welcoming vibe.
"The smoothies contain their signature Clean and Lean supplements whizzed up with other delicious superfoods. We love the Body Brilliance for a chocolate hit or Protein Excellence - a delicious vanilla, banana and almond butter concoction. They also serve shots of ‘Berry Burn’ pre workout - Bodyism’s equivalent of a Jagerbomb - a superfood berry blend to fire up the metabolism! They also offer things like wraps, courgetti and paleo slices. We love their no nonsense mantra of cut the C.R.A.P."
2. PROTEIN HAUS, MOORGATE STATION
“Designed to help city slickers squeeze a bit of health into their lunch hour, Protein Haus was developed by Personal Trainer Carli Wheatley to target time-poor urbanites looking for a simple solution to get lean, lose weight and maintain a low carb, low calorie high protein diet.
"For shakes choose a base of filtered water, fat free milk, almond milk or coconut water and then add chocolate, vanilla, strawberry or hemp protein.
"We also love the egg white wedges and chicken with broccoli, peppers and mushrooms washed down with a Green Detox juice made from with spinach, kale, celery, fennel, cucumber, mint and lemon."
TIP: If you can’t get away from your desk during lunch you can also find them on Deliveroo.
3. GINGER & MINT, CROUCH END
"Not just for yummy mummies, Crouch End has a vibrant fitness scene right now, being home to studios like HIITGirl and Centric: 3 Tribes. And this cafe is perfect for a pre or post-workout pick-me-up featuring a gluten and dairy-free menu, hearty superfood smoothies, protein shakes, green juices and boosters.
"If you’re local to the area and swinging by for breakfast, try an Acai bowl, scrambled eggs and smoked salmon or Avocado on toast. They also offer 1 day, 3 day or 5 day juice packages starting from £20."
DOSE |RETOX Picks
1. LADIES & GENTLEMEn, highgate
“A disused underground Victorian lavatory-turned-cocktail-destination with a seasonal menu of homemade liquors and syrups, botanicals and herbs.
"This place is the brainchild of spirit producer William Borrell (owner of Vestal Vodka) and houses its very own 16 litre copper still, producing up to 12 bottles of bespoke spirits per day (we love the Highwayman Gin)."
2. NIGHTJAR, OLD STREET
“A glamorous, subterranean cocktail bar with a killer cocktail menu. Try the St Germain Presse with elderflower liquor, muddled mint and lemon over crushed ice. Or go crazy with a sparkling coconut water…. whatever your poison!
"And the nearby Fierce Grace yoga studio is the perfect way to sweat out that last, late night tipple the next day."
3. BRUMUS BAR, HAYMARKET HOTEL
“Try the Mediterranean G&T here, another great elderflower concoction (we like elderflower) infused with rosemary syrup and Fever Tree Mediterranean Tonic Water. If you fancy something a bit more fruity try the Raspberry and Lychee Bellini with Kwai-Feh lychee liquor and raspberry puree topped with prosecco.
"And it's worth checking out the hotel's activity schedule incase theres an aquaphysical Floatfit class on in the pool, then you can squeeze in a little pre-retox detox!"
