Model, spinaholic and self-confessed party girl Hilary Gilbert, 35, launched BOOM Cycle spinning studio with her fiance Robert Rowland in 2011.
I interviewed the Kentucky-born blonde recently for a piece on healthy hedonists and loved her attitude towards going out, working out and combining the two.
She told me: "I think its very much possible to be a healthy hedonist. You don't have to be a saint all the time to be healthy and you don’t have to be a maniac all the time to be a hedonist. It’s about doing what feels good and embracing the most fun you can in life. It’s great to feel and look healthy and its great to let go with friends and dance the night away."
YES Hilary! Yes.
Hilary Gilbert's DETOX| picks
1. BEL-AIR CAFE, Shoreditch:
'My favourite healthy eatery. If you haven't hit it up for breakfast or lunch it's a must! Tucked away on Paul Street in Shoreditch, it's a tasty hidden gem making healthy eating so delicious you think about it for days after you eat it and it may actually give you super powers. That's how I feel at least and there's nothing better than a satisfying foodie refuel after working out - you’ve worked so hard for it after all!'
2. BOOM Cycle, Holborn & Shoreditch:
'My favourite way to detox the weekend’s retox.
Being the owner I not only instruct, but I also love taking classes with our BOOMtastic team. I thrive on the energy BOOM Cycle gives you, from the moment you walk into the studio to the moment you walk out.
The vibe puts you in the best mood to champion your day or leave you on a high after a day in the office. Getting a serious workout is easy because I just want to dance (on the bike) SO MUCH! The music. The beat. The sweat. It totally purifies you in all ways.
I miss it when I go on holiday and find it's the best way to snap back into shape when I come back. For me, there's no other workout like it.'
3. FACE PLACE London at the Rosewood Hotel, Holborn:
'Detoxing for me isn't all about fitness and food. Being a model I like to look after my skin and find that a monthly facial at FACE PLACE in the Rosewood Hotel is the perfect way to detoxify my skin and the feeling you get visiting the Rosewood makes for a truly magical experience.
The products they use leave you with an instant glow and that fresh-faced feeling. They also use a non-painful electric current to penetrate the nutrients deep into the skin and stimulate the cells (sounds horrible but it's heavenly!).
They have also just started doing mini manicures so you can get your nails taken care of while you purify your pores. The Rosewood is like my home from home, I just love it every time I visit.'
Hilary Gilbert's |RETOX picks
1. Scarfe’s Bar at the Rosewood Hotel, Holborn
'Upstairs at the Rosewood, this place is just fantastic for service, food and of course drinks! They often have live jazz which after a long day in the studio is nice to relax and unwind to.
It's comfortable, welcoming and easy on the eye. I always feel luxurious in there and they always remember you (or maybe we are there that often...).'
2.The Gunkmakers, Clerkenwell:
'My go-to spot for chilling out. The crowd is of the coolest variety, they have great drinks and a delicious menu that changes often so you can hit it up after a day's work and not have to rush home for food. The added extra bonus is that you can get your hair done upstairs at the Gun Club if you like (two birds and all).'
3. BLIXEN, Spitalfields:
'This place is the perfect balance between retox and detox: you can hit it up for their fantastic drinks menu or equally if you aren't looking to totally blow it out of the water, it's a great Sunday brunch spot for a healthy eat and bloody Mary- it's all about the balance.'
