(London) The Aveda review: Wellness and the wow factor at Covent Garden's holistic hair salon

Nothing says 'I love you' like a serious pampering session, and Valentine's Day seems like the perfect opportunity to encourage a bit of self-love while raving about my latest beauty crush, Covent Garden's sassy Aveda salon.

I spent an afternoon there recently, going in for an (admittedly not-terribly adventurous) 'me but better' option of balayage and a bit of a trim, and ending up delighted with the results and indeed the whole high-end experience.

Here are three reasons you should think about taking yourself on a date there pronto...

For once my request of something glamorous but low maintenance was received with a smile and some workable suggestions rather than an attempt to foist a full-head of highlights on me.

Yes, I want to look like the love child of SJP and Jennifer Anniston but I don't have either of their bank balances and I felt that my colourist Finn took this on board as she proposed bespoke 'melted' highlights that would only need freshening up a couple of times a year and recommended a stylist who definitely wouldn't try and talk me into a bob.

The Aveda experience is a heady combination of cutting edge techniques and sustainable products so you can be happy that you are being kind to the planet while being kind to yourself.

I loved the in-salon Botanical Treatment to add a bit of vavoom to my freshly-coloured hair and the invati thickening range that I was recommended to use at home has been brilliant at keeping up the salon look and feel.

Not all hairdressers are created equal, and - sorry snippers - its often the ambiance rather than the pure skill of the stylists that elevates a place into a destination salon.

Aveda offers a 'sensory journey' experience that for me included organic tea on arrival, a lush hand massage as my colour took and an essential oil scalp massage ahead of my cut.

The salon itself is spacious, sleek and buzzy, there's an on-site spa for organic treatments, and on-site Pain Quotidien for gluten-free lunch/matcha lattes.

And after your blow-off is finished it's just a five minute walk to the bright lights of the West End to show off your hot new hair over a cocktail. And don't forget the selfie in the Hoxton Holborn Hotel loos.
