When I'm being a good yogi I try and practice two or three times a week, but even in a big city it's not always easy to make it to the studio.
Which is why online classes have become my favourite new technology habit.
Thanks to subscription services like yogaia.com all you now need is WiFi, your own mat and just enough room to swing a cat/grab your feet for a 'Happy Baby' to access hours of soul-affirming sessions.
Which is brilliant news for anyone with busy schedules, as well as new mums, slightly anxious beginners or even those on a bit of a budget (membership starts at just £7.49 p/month and Detox|Retox readers can get a free 30 day trial by using the code DETOX at the short sign-up page HERE).
I've been using the yogaia.com site for two months, taking classes with my favourite online gurus at my home in London, on my festive family travels around the country in December and even on holiday to Thailand in January. And I have loved doing the live classes (joined via my laptop or even the iPhone at a push) as well as the pre-recorded sessions, workouts and guided meditations that can be accessed 24/7.
Here are five reasons that I think it could work for you too...
FIVE REASONS TO LOVE YOGAIA.COM
1. IT’S GREAT FOR BUILDING CONFIDENCE
Yogis are generally a friendly bunch, but trying anything new can be intimidating at first and online yoga is a brilliant way get to grips with basic poses and terminology in the comfort of your own home before hitting a group class. Namaste.
2. IT OFFERS A COMMUNITY VIBE WITHOUT THE PRESSURE TO DRESS IN HEAD-TO-TOE LULULEMON
It may just be you and your screen in the room, but the site and the teachers foster a real group vibe, especially in the live classes, with feedback encouraged and the opportunity to ask as many questions as you want (and nobody ever need know that you’re practising in your oldest Primark leggings most of the time).
3. TOTAL FLEXIBILITY
Banks of classes available 24 hours a day mean that you can fit them around your schedule whether that’s at home before work, in your lunch hour, in a hotel gym or on the floor of friends and family's spare rooms. You can choose sessions from 15, 30, 45 or 60 minutes according to your window, and clever technology means you can add classes direct to your iCal to help keep you organised as well as pause and save sessions to complete later if you're interrupted by the kids/dog/Tinder/room service.
4. ALL LEVELS COVERED
From sweat-tastic Power Yoga classes to restorative Yin and energising Flow, the packed schedule makes it easy to choose the right style according to your energy levels/ability. Teachers will often offer modifications to make moves easier/harder. And if you’ve been a bit overambitious or even find yourself at risk of nodding off in a session that’s a tad too easy then it’s easy to leave class without upsetting the teacher or your classmates by just closing the screen!
5. IT’S A SAFE (AND WARM!) SPACE TO TRY NEW THINGS
Yoga is just one part of the online offering - barre fitness and meditation are two other things that I have loved getting to explore more through the site - and so this is a brilliant way to try some new things risk-free, and without even having to leave the house and brave the cold or Lycra-clad strangers.
